Get ready for a challenging desert ATV excursion. The harsh terrain of the Judean Desert was a refuge for Jewish rebels, religious sects, and Christian monastics over the centuries. The route combines challenging off-road driving, breathtaking views, and an amazing spring in the heart of the desert. Afterwards, we will have lunch at HaCnaanit restaurant.
Drivers, please make sure to bring your driver’s license.
Ein Perat
In the afternoon, we will hike through Ein Perat, also known as Wadi Quelt. Wadi Qelt is a deep ravine (wadi) which cuts through the Judean Desert between Jerusalem and Jericho, descending over 1,000 feet in elevation. A road running through the wadi was an ancient trade route between Jericho and Jerusalem. The sides of the wadi feature ancient monasteries carved into the cliffs. The Ein Perat stream runs through part of the wadi, creating lush vegetation in the otherwise dry desert.
Ein Perat is identified by some as the biblical "Nachal Cherith" where Elijah hid after announcing a drought to Ahab and was miraculously fed by ravens in 1 Kings 17, although this is likely not correct as the location is described as being “before” or “east” of the Jordan. The area is most likely in the Gilead in the north of Israel, where Elijah would already be familiar with.
